Leon Wystrychowski to face trial in Düsseldorf over protest slogans
Leon Wystrychowski, an activist from Duisburg associated with the ethecon Foundation, is scheduled to appear before the Higher Regional Court of Düsseldorf on August 26, 2026. The legal proceedings stem from slogans he shouted during a 2023 demonstration in Duisburg, specifically “From the river to the sea Palestine will be free” and “Von Duisburg bis nach Gaza Yalla Intifada.”
German prosecutors and police contend that these slogans constitute an endorsement of violence and war crimes against Israeli civilians. However, supporters argue the phrases are expressions of solidarity with Palestinians and protests against occupation and war. While the Duisburg District Court previously found the slogans did not constitute a “call to violence or crime” and acquitted him, the prosecution is seeking a conviction in the current proceedings.
