German legal proceedings against Palestine activist
Overview
Leon Wystrychowski, a pro-Palestinian activist from Duisburg, is facing legal proceedings regarding slogans used during a 2023 demonstration. The slogans in question include “From the river to the sea Palestine will be free” and “Von Duisburg bis nach Gaza Yalla Intifada.”
While the Duisburg District Court had previously acquitted Wystrychowski, ruling that the phrases did not constitute a “call to violence or crime,” the prosecution appealed the decision. The Higher Regional Court of Düsseldorf has since overturned the acquittal and referred the case back to the Duisburg District Court for further proceedings. During this process, the Düsseldorf Public Prosecutor's Office shifted its legal focus toward the temporal proximity of the slogans to the events of October 7.
