Leptospirosis cases surge in Peru with 50 deaths reported

Peru is experiencing a significant increase in leptospirosis cases, with 13,962 infections and 50 deaths recorded through the 41st epidemiological week of 2026. According to the Ministry of Health (Minsa), these figures represent a 73% increase in infections compared to the total reported in 2025. Additionally, the 50 deaths recorded this year have already surpassed the combined total of 49 deaths reported between 2022 and 2025.

Loreto has reported the highest number of cases with 3,583, followed by Piura with 3,028. Lima has also emerged as a concern, recording 315 cases and 10 deaths, resulting in a fatality rate of 3.17%, the second highest in the country after Áncash.

Medical experts, including representative of the Medical College of Peru Aníbal Velásquez Valdivia, warned that heavy rains and flooding linked to the El Niño phenomenon could exacerbate the crisis by contaminating water and soil with the urine of infected animals, such as rodents. Health officials recommend ensuring access to safe water, reinforcing hygiene measures, and seeking early medical treatment to prevent complications.
