Public health crises in Peru
Overview
Peru has faced significant increases in infectious disease cases during 2026. Earlier reports indicated a surge in dengue fever, with approximately 80,000 cases recorded, a more than 100% increase from the 35,000 cases in 2025. Ministry of Health representative Yuri Alegre attributed this rise to persistent high temperatures and the lack of a distinct winter season, noting that northern regions and cities like Lima, Piura, and La Libertad were heavily affected.
Following the dengue reports, data revealed a simultaneous surge in leptospirosis. Through the 41st epidemiological week of 2026, the Ministry of Health recorded 13,962 leptospirosis infections and 50 deaths, representing a 73% increase in infections compared to 2025. The death toll for the year has already surpassed the combined total of 49 deaths reported between 2022 and 2025.
Loreto and Piura reported the highest number of leptospirosis cases, while Lima recorded a fatality rate of 3.17%. Medical experts, including Aníbal Velásquez Valdivia of the Medical College of Peru, warned that heavy rains and flooding linked to the El Niño phenomenon could worsen the crisis by contaminating water and soil with infected animal urine.
Recent data shows the La Libertad region has recorded over 16,000 dengue cases, consisting of approximately 12,000 confirmed and 4,000 probable instances. Arístides Aurora, president of the Medical Federation of Peru in the region, criticized current prevention efforts, stating that resources and brigades are centralized within the Regional Health Management, which may delay responses in certain provinces.
