Romania expands retail networks and energy infrastructure
Romania is undergoing significant developments across its retail and energy sectors. In the retail market, Lidl is aggressively expanding its network, planning to open over 40 new stores in 2026 with a budget exceeding €285 million, which is expected to create approximately 1,000 jobs. Other retailers like Penny and BIPA are also increasing their presence, while Kaufland has reached the 200-store milestone.
The energy sector is seeing major infrastructure and funding initiatives. The government has launched two programs through the Modernization Fund totaling €650 million to help public institutions produce and store renewable energy via solar panels and batteries. Additionally, Transgaz and Romgaz are advancing gas pipeline projects in Mureș and Botoșani to strengthen national transport networks. To improve regional stability, ANRE has approved a strategic plan for Transelectrica to increase electricity interconnection capacity with Bulgaria and Hungary by 2035.
In consumer affairs, the ANPC has introduced new regulations requiring all physical and online retailers to clearly display consumer protection contact information to facilitate easier reporting of grievances.
