French left-wing leaders debate unity and ecology for 2027

French left-wing leaders are debating unity and policy directions ahead of the 2027 presidential election during various summer political gatherings.

At the Ecologist summer universities in Grenoble, Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure called for a broad coalition, emphasizing that no single political family can win alone. He stressed the importance of the ecological transition and argued against permanent divisions between left-wing factions, suggesting that voters need clear reasons to participate.

Meanwhile, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise, concluded his movement's summer meetings in Valence with a focus on environmental and economic radicalism. He proposed an ‘ecological conscription’ to create a trained reserve for civil security and climate crises. Additionally, Mélenchon pledged to challenge the government's budget, proposing to tax large fortunes and multinational corporations to fund social investments and address economic issues.
