Lesvos livestock farmers to receive €7.7 million in compensation

Thanasis Kavvadas, the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, announced in the Greek Parliament that payments totaling 7,726,101 euros will be issued to livestock farmers in Lesvos. This compensation is for animals lost due to the African Swine Fever outbreak.

As of October 2, the first cycle of identification, tracing, and sampling across all island farms has been completed. The ministry is now prepared to begin a second phase of inspections within a 3-kilometer protection zone, focusing on approximately 300 farms to monitor animal health and biosecurity measures.

Regarding the livestock registry, the ministry noted that out of 3,381 originally registered farms, 2,622 were active at the time of the outbreak. The Ministry of Rural Development and Food is currently developing a comprehensive Greek Livestock Recovery Plan to modernize units and improve biosecurity standards.
