Lesvos livestock farmers to receive compensation for African Swine Fever

The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food is preparing to launch a compensation platform by Friday for more than 104 livestock farmers on Lesvos. The measures address the impact of African Swine Fever, involving approximately 20,000 slaughtered animals.

To date, 7.464 million euros have been distributed to cover slaughtered animals, lost income, and support for local dairy businesses. These funds are designated as tax-free, non-transferable, and non-seizable. Additional compensation is planned for the remaining 50% of lost income from the second half of 2026. Furthermore, new legislation has been introduced to compensate for milk that could not be sold, and a joint ministerial decision regarding animal feed is expected to be finalized by the end of September.

Regarding disease control, over 80% of farms on Lesvos have been traced, with roughly 300 farms still awaiting inspection. More than 40 veterinarians and agronomists, organized into 23 teams, are currently conducting sampling operations. The ministry's primary goal remains the 100% completion of tracing to eradicate the disease. While the Ministry of National Defense is assisting with operational coordination, the Ministry of Rural Development and Food retains exclusive responsibility for strategy, health protocols, and veterinary decisions.
