Lesvos swine fever crisis: Greece transfers management to Ministry of Defense

The Greek government has transferred the operational coordination of the African Swine Fever crisis on Lesvos to the Ministry of National Defense. This decision has drawn sharp criticism from political parties and scientific organizations, including SYRIZA, PASOK, and the Technical Chamber of Greece (GEOT.E.E.).

Critics argue that involving the military is an admission of the failure of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food to manage the epidemic. Reports indicate that approximately 85,000 animals have been killed, representing about one-fifth of the island's livestock capital. Opponents claim the government failed to provide adequate veterinary staffing, epidemiological surveillance, and biosecurity measures over the past months.

Minister of Rural Development and Food Margaritis Schoinas has stated that the goal is the total eradication of the disease rather than mere containment. While the military will provide personnel and infrastructure, scientific bodies emphasize that military involvement cannot substitute for professional veterinary expertise and scientific planning.
