Leszno region replaces waste bags with 240‑litre green containers

From 1 July residents of the Leszno region will no longer use plastic waste bags. The municipal council approved green containers of 240 litres capacity, collected once every two months. The monthly fee for waste collection rises from 33 zł to 45 zł per person, with a 5 zł discount for households that compost bio‑waste, lowering the net charge to 40 zł. The penalty for failing to separate waste increases to 90 zł per person, double the previous amount, to improve recycling rates. The changes, voted on 14 May by the Communal Union of Municipalities of the Leszno region, are set to remain in force until the end of 2027. Officials said the higher fees are necessary to cover contractual obligations for waste removal and to prevent a system shutdown.
