LG Display develops FLiPP technology for maskless OLED production

LG Display has provided updates on its FLiPP technology, a new manufacturing process designed to produce OLED panels without the use of traditional Fine Metal Masks (FMM). The acronym stands for ‘FMM-Less Innovative Pixel Patterning’.

By eliminating metal masks, the technology aims to address several industrial limitations, including high manufacturing costs, energy consumption, and brightness efficiency. The current FMM method requires extreme precision and can lead to material waste, as not all the substrate is converted into usable active surface area.

While the project is still in development and promises more efficient, brighter, and cheaper panels for monitors and large-scale televisions, consumers may have to wait until approximately 2029 for these advancements to reach the TV market.
