LG Display FLiPP OLED technology development

Overview

LG Display has announced the development of ‘FLiPP’ (FMM-Less Innovative Pixel Patterning), a next-generation OLED patterning technology. This process aims to eliminate the need for traditional Fine Metal Masks (FMM) by utilizing photolithography instead.

Technical specifications provided by the company indicate that FLiPP can increase the aperture ratio to 65%, compared to 42% with traditional methods. This shift is expected to result in 1.6 times higher brightness, a 2.4 times increase in lifespan, and a 13% reduction in power consumption. The technology is designed for high production flexibility, capable of producing displays ranging from 1-inch smartwatches to televisions exceeding 100 inches using 8th generation mother glass.

While the technology aims to address high manufacturing costs and material waste in the IT OLED market, the company notes that these advancements may not reach the television market until approximately 2029.
