LG Display develops OLED prototypes to combat burn-in

LG Display has developed functional prototypes of a new type of OLED screen designed to combat image retention, commonly known as burn-in. This technology addresses a major hurdle for using OLED panels in computers, where static elements like taskbars and menus can cause permanent pixel damage.

While OLED technology is widely used in smartphones and televisions due to its self-emissive pixels and high contrast, the risk of burn-in has limited its adoption in devices like the MacBook Pro or iMac. LG Display’s new invention aims to mitigate these effects, potentially making OLED a viable option for high-end computer displays.

OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) technology offers superior energy efficiency and response times compared to LCD or LED panels because each pixel produces its own light. However, the higher cost and susceptibility to image persistence remain primary challenges for the industry.
