LG Display unveils FLiPP technology to advance OLED manufacturing

LG Display has announced the development of ‘FLiPP’, a next-generation OLED patterning technology designed to eliminate the need for Fine Metal Masks (FMM) in the manufacturing process. By utilizing photolithography instead of FMM, the company aims to overcome current technical and cost limitations in the IT OLED market.

According to Chief Technology Officer Choi Young-seok, the FLiPP technology increases the aperture ratio to 65%, a significant improvement over the 42% achieved with traditional FMM methods. This advancement allows for 1.6 times higher brightness, a 2.4 times increase in lifespan, and a 13% reduction in power consumption.

The technology offers high production flexibility, as it can theoretically produce displays ranging from 1-inch smartwatches to over 100-inch televisions using full-size 8th generation mother glass without cutting it. This approach allows LG Display to maximize the efficiency of existing production infrastructure rather than requiring entirely new facilities. While competitors like Visionox and JDI are also pursuing maskless OLED technologies, LG Display intends to use FLiPP to drive market penetration in the IT sector by addressing both performance and cost concerns.
