LGBTIQ+ rights face legal challenges in Australia and crackdowns in Türkiye

In Australia, approximately 100 organizations, including unions, disability groups, and LGBTIQ+ advocates, have issued an open letter opposing proposals to redefine ‘sex’ under the Sex Discrimination Act. The coalition warns that such changes would jeopardize existing protections for transgender and intersex individuals, as well as women. This collective action follows the Senate's second rejection of a Coalition Bill aimed at rewriting the Act.

Simultaneously, in Türkiye, human rights organizations have condemned a coordinated crackdown on LGBTI+ civil society. Following police raids on homes and association offices between September 12 and 13, at least 162 people were detained. The operation, titled ‘My Family is Safe’ by Justice Minister Akın Gürlek, targeted activists, board members of various LGBTI+ associations, and businesses. Detainees face accusations including ‘obscenity’ and ‘prostitution’ as authorities investigate groups they claim ‘promote LGBT and immorality’.
