LGBTIQ+ rights challenges in Australia and Türkiye

Overview

In Türkiye, authorities have launched a widespread crackdown on the LGBTI+ community and civil society. Following police raids on homes, businesses, and association offices across 15 provinces, including Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, at least 162 individuals were detained. Justice Minister Akın Gürlek described the operations as part of a ‘Family Decade’ initiative to protect social order, while prosecutors leveled charges such as ‘obscenity’ and the facilitation of prostitution against activists and organization members.

The situation escalated as courts ordered pre-trial detention for numerous activists, including members of the organization Kaos GL. Protests in Istanbul and Ankara resulted in the detention of over 100 people, including journalists. While 106 protesters were recently released, many activists remain in pre-trial detention.

In response to the operations, authorities also implemented internet restrictions, blocking access to various LGBTI+ websites and social media accounts, as well as those belonging to human rights organizations such as Amnesty International Turkey. International bodies, including the United Nations and the European Union, have expressed concern regarding the detentions and the discriminatory nature of the actions.
