Liberec Forest Pool Reopens After Community-Led Renovation

The historic Forest Pool (Lesní koupaliště) in Liberec, Czech Republic, was restored following a 2010 fire that destroyed its main building. After years of neglect, a 2016 community initiative revived the site, and in 2020 the local firm Mjölk architekt secured a lease, raised private donations, and began rebuilding. The new structure combines CLT panels with a lightweight timber frame and a turquoise‑painted steel roof, housing changing rooms, a bistro, a sauna and an outdoor seating area.

To mark the start of the swimming season, the architects organized an annual mass lake‑jump, with the mayor blowing a whistle as bathers plunge into the cold waters. The renovated pool now serves both locals and visitors, blending historic charm with modern, cost‑effective design.

The project highlights how community action and innovative architecture can revive a public amenity that has been part of Liberec’s cultural life since before World War II.
