Liberec Zoo sea lion Hugo dies after ingesting doll head
A sea lion named Hugo has died at the Liberec Zoo in the Czech Republic. A necropsy revealed that a doll head was found in the animal's digestive tract, which zoo staff had previously retrieved from the enclosure's pool two days prior to the death.
Spokesperson Barbora Tesařová stated that the foreign object likely caused the processes that led to Hugo's death, though the zoo is still awaiting laboratory results from collected samples. Hugo was the only sea lion currently housed at the facility.
In response to the incident, zoo officials are planning improvements to the sea lion pavilion and are working to arrange for new animals to arrive in the future. The zoo has issued an urgent plea to the public to refrain from feeding animals or throwing foreign objects into the enclosures to prevent similar tragedies.
