Liberec Zoo sea lion death
Overview
Hugo, a 17-year-old Steller sea lion and significant participant in European breeding programs, died unexpectedly at the Liberec Zoo in the Czech Republic.
A necropsy revealed that the head of a plastic doll was located at the junction of the stomach and small intestine, which likely caused fatal complications. Zoo staff had previously retrieved a damaged part of a doll from the enclosure’s pool two days before the death, though the animal had shown no prior changes in behavior or health.
Officials noted that preventative medical examinations were difficult because anesthesia poses extreme risks to sea lions and plastic objects are often hard to detect via X-ray or ultrasound. In response to the incident, the zoo is reviewing safety measures, which may include the installation of additional surveillance cameras. The facility is also continuing renovations on the sea lion enclosure.
