Liberecký kraj funds environmental cleanup at EMBA paper mill

The Liberecký Region is providing approximately three million CZK to support the remediation of long-standing environmental contamination at the EMBA paper mill site in Pasekách nad Jizerou.

The contamination is located in a former water power plant millrace, which measures roughly 50 meters long and up to six meters wide. This stone-built structure lacks impermeable insulation and connects directly to the Jizera River, creating a risk that pollutants could spread during high water levels. The sludge in the area contains high concentrations of petroleum substances, copper, cadmium, nickel, lead, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

The total cleanup project is estimated to cost nearly 58 million CZK, with the majority of the funding provided by European Union grants through the Environment Operational Programme. Work to remove the primary source of pollution is already underway and is expected to be completed by mid-2029.
