Czech environmental remediation and river revitalization
Overview
Environmental initiatives in the Czech Republic have focused on both industrial cleanup and ecological restoration. In the Liberecký Region, the regional government is contributing approximately three million CZK toward a 58 million CZK project to remediate contamination at the EMBA paper mill in Pasekách nad Jizerou. The project targets sludge containing petroleum substances and heavy metals, such as copper, cadmium, nickel, and lead, located in a millrace connected to the Jizera River.
Simultaneously, broader revitalization efforts are underway in Hradec Králové and Liberec. In Hradec Králové, the state enterprise Povodí Labe has initiated an eight million CZK project to restore the Holštejn dead arm of the Orlice River by removing sediment and creating new aquatic biotopes. In Liberec, urban riverfront improvements include the completion of a new promenade along the Lusatian Neisse, converting former parking areas into recreational park spaces.
