Liberia expands healthcare capacity through equipment donations and regulatory decentralization

Liberia is advancing its healthcare infrastructure through new medical equipment donations and expanded regulatory oversight. Partners In Health Liberia has donated US$71,000 worth of equipment to the James Jenkins Dossen Memorial Hospital in Maryland County. The donation includes the county’s first endoscope, 23 patient monitors, two ultrasound machines, and infusion pumps. This equipment allows for local diagnosis of gastrointestinal conditions and internal bleeding, which previously required patients to travel to Monrovia.

Simultaneously, the Liberia Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority (LMHRA) announced plans to extend medicine regulation to all 15 counties by early 2027. To support this decentralization, a pharmaceutical waste disposal site has opened in Margibi County to mitigate environmental and public health risks. The LMHRA is also pursuing a public-private partnership to establish a quality control laboratory for testing medicines, medical devices, and food products.
