Liberia Finance Minister urges investment in emerging economy

Liberian Finance and Development Planning Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan has called on international investors and the Liberian diaspora to invest in the country’s emerging economy. Speaking at the Liberian Diaspora Conference in Washington, D.C., on September 26, 2026, Ngafuan emphasized that Liberia is transitioning from a post-conflict nation to one defined by stability and untapped opportunity.

Ngafuan highlighted several key indicators of progress, including over two decades of sustained peace, successful democratic elections, and the country’s current role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. He noted that Liberia’s economy grew by approximately 5.1 percent in 2025, with the International Monetary Fund projecting growth of about 5.5 percent in 2026, driven largely by the mining, construction, and manufacturing sectors.

Other areas of development cited include improvements in infrastructure, electricity, digital transformation, and financial technology. Ngafuan also pointed to a significant fiscal milestone, noting that Liberia recently exceeded US$1 billion in domestic revenue collections for the first time. However, he cautioned that these revenues are essential for meeting national obligations such as education, healthcare, security, and debt servicing.
