Liberia flooding affects thousands amid climate change

Heavy and unpredictable rainfall, intensified by climate change, has caused destructive seasonal flooding across Monrovia’s low-lying communities in Liberia. The flooding is exacerbated by clogged drains, construction in wetlands, and unplanned urban growth.

In the Lofa Community of Montserrado County, an estimated 5,950 people are affected. Across two counties, nearly 20,000 families have faced displacement, disrupted schooling, lost income, and illness. At least seven deaths have been reported as floodwaters surround homes and remain for several days.

Residents are calling for the reopening of blocked waterways. Meanwhile, officials from the National Disaster Management Agency are emphasizing the need for improved weather forecasting, better drainage systems, wetland protection, and increased funding for disaster response.
