Liberia health leaders call for resilient medical systems by 2030

At the 10th Annual General Scientific Meeting of the Liberia College of Physicians and Surgeons (LCPS) in Monrovia, health leaders called for a transformation of Liberia’s healthcare system to achieve resilience, equity, and sustainability by 2030.

Professor Angnon A. Koffi Balogou of the West African Health Organization (WAHO) emphasized that Liberia must move beyond mere recovery from past crises, such as the Ebola outbreak and COVID-19, toward a system capable of proactive preparedness. He advocated for stronger institutions, reliable referral systems, and improved access for vulnerable populations, including women, children, and those in rural areas.

LCPS President Dr. John Mulbah reported that the institution has successfully trained 166 medical specialists since 2012, expanding from four to 11 faculties. This progress marks a significant shift from a time when all specialists were trained abroad. However, Dr. Mulbah warned that retaining these qualified professionals within Liberia remains a critical challenge, necessitating greater investment and support to prevent brain drain.
