Liberia hits historic $1 billion domestic revenue milestone

Liberia has achieved a historic fiscal milestone, with the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) reporting that domestic revenue collections have surpassed $1 billion for the first time in the nation's 179-year history.

President Joseph Boakai credited the achievement to a “whole-of-government approach” and the resilience of the Liberian people. The administration noted that revenue collections rose from $699 million in 2024 to $848 million in 2025. The government is now targeting an annual budget of $1.3 billion by the end of 2026.

President Boakai and Finance Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan emphasized that these funds are intended to improve public welfare, including the deployment of 3,000 volunteer teachers and health workers, the recruitment of 600 new Armed Forces personnel, and the rehabilitation of road corridors.

However, the milestone has drawn criticism from opposition members. Matthew Young of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) questioned the direct impact on citizens, arguing that a significant portion of the revenue is directed toward government recurrent expenditure rather than social programs to alleviate poverty.
