Liberia hosts 16th Africa Scrabble Championship

Liberia is hosting the 16th Africa Scrabble Championship (ASC) at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Monrovia. The tournament, organized by the Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA), features 134 competitors from 24 African nations.

Defending champions Nigeria have arrived in Monrovia with a 25-player squad, including reigning individual African champion Oluwatimilehin Doko. Nigeria has won 14 of the previous 15 continental championships and aims to maintain its dominance in both team and individual categories.

Other notable delegations include Kenya, which sent 34 players, and Uganda, with 30 competitors. The event features a record prize fund of $35,000. Liberian player Benjamin Garkpah expressed confidence in the host nation's 30-player team, noting that playing on home soil does not provide a tactical advantage in the sport.
