16th Africa Scrabble Championship in Liberia
Overview
The 16th Africa Scrabble Championship (ASC), organized by the Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA), was hosted at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Monrovia, Liberia. The tournament initially featured 134 competitors from 24 African nations, including large delegations from Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda. Nigeria arrived with a 25-player squad, including reigning individual champion Oluwatimilehin Doko, seeking to maintain its dominance after winning 14 of the previous 15 continental championships.
By the conclusion of the event on October 25, the tournament recorded 110 players from seven participating countries: Liberia, Nigeria, Zambia, Ghana, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Kenya. Nigeria achieved a podium sweep and secured the Best Country award, with Abdulmumin Jimoh claiming the continental title and a US$7,000 prize. George Ezinore finished second, and Emmanuel Umujose finished third. This victory brings Nigeria’s record to 15 titles out of 16 editions since 1994.
The tournament was marked by the withdrawal of defending champion Oluwatimilehin Doko, who was forced to exit after 17 rounds due to sudden illness.
Following the championship, Haruna Adamu assumed the presidency of PANASA. Former president Toke Aka advised the new leadership to prioritize engagement with national federations and strengthen the association’s secretariat to address administrative challenges.
