Liberia receives $50 million IMF funding amid infrastructure reforms

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved the disbursement of approximately $50 million to Liberia following the successful completion of program reviews. This funding includes $26.2 million under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and $23.96 million under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF), a mechanism designed to assist nations in managing climate and economic shocks.

The IMF noted that Liberian authorities have met performance criteria for the end of 2025, showing progress in budgetary, financial, institutional, and climate reforms. This support aims to restore macroeconomic stability, preserve debt sustainability, and strengthen public governance during a period of growth driven by the mining, construction, and industrial sectors.

Parallel to these financial reforms, the administration of President Joseph Boakai is prioritizing energy infrastructure to support national development and digital initiatives, such as a proposed national data center. Recent energy projects include the inauguration of a 20 MW solar plant at Mount Coffee and the restoration of 22 MW of hydroelectric capacity. The World Bank is expected to provide an additional $57 million to support solar capacity expansion, battery storage, and hydroelectric complex improvements.
