Liberian opposition leaders to sign joint communiqué
Leaders of five Liberian opposition political parties are scheduled to sign a joint communiqué on Sunday, September 27, 2026, during a roundtable meeting at the Sinkor Palace in Monrovia. Hosted by Simeon C. M. Freeman of the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC), the gathering aims to establish the technical foundations, structures, and mechanisms necessary to sustain formal cooperation among the parties.
Participating leaders include former President George Manneh Weah, Sr. of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Alexander Benedict Cummings of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah, Sr. of the Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE), and Jonathan A. Mason of the Union of Liberian Democrats Party (ULDP). This meeting follows previous consultations held earlier in September to identify common interests and discuss the national situation.
However, the coalition process faces a setback as the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) has formally withdrawn from the talks. The CMC stated it will not endorse the current draft communiqué, citing the absence of a binding reform program. The party argued that any coalition must prioritize constitutional reform and institutional independence rather than simply offering an alternative to the current administration.
