Liberian opposition coalition formation

Overview

Leaders from five Liberian opposition parties—the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), the Alternative National Congress (ANC), the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC), the Union of Liberian Democrats Party (ULDP), and the Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE)—have moved to establish a framework for political cooperation.

Following preliminary consultations in early September, the parties met at the Sinkor Palace in Monrovia to sign a joint communiqué. While the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) withdrew from the process, citing a lack of a binding reform program, the remaining signatories successfully established the Opposition Political Parties’ Joint Technical Committee (OPPJTC).

This committee, composed of two members from each participating party, is tasked with creating thematic working groups and a common implementation agenda. The coalition aims to maintain individual party autonomy while working to hold President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration accountable ahead of the 2029 elections. In their communiqué, the parties accused the government of territorial losses in Foya, selective anti-corruption efforts, and using the Cybercrime Act to suppress critics, alleging the administration is moving toward a “police state”.

Following a second roundtable in Monrovia, the parties reaffirmed these positions through a signed unity accord to strengthen cooperation for the 2029 general and presidential elections. The group continues to issue allegations against the Boakai administration, specifically citing the undermining of the rule of law and the suppression of free speech.
