Liberia's NaFAA receives US$325,000 FAO grant for fish market

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) has secured a US$325,000 grant from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to construct a modern fish market in Congo Town, Monrovia.

Funded under the FAO’s Technical Cooperation Programme, the project aims to reduce post-landing spoilage and improve food safety. The facility will feature a 20-ton cold room, energy-efficient power systems, a hygienic waste handling system, and a fleet of refrigerated motorbikes for deliveries. The hub is intended to serve artisanal fishers, aquaculture farmers, and inland producers.

NaFAA plans to operate the market through a public-private partnership to ensure commercial sustainability. Additionally, a portion of the grant will support the University of Liberia’s Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences to develop new curriculum, training modules, and small-scale fisheries guidelines.
