Liberia fisheries sector development initiatives

Overview

Liberia is implementing several projects to modernize its fisheries sector and support local industry participants.

In late October 2026, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) secured a US$325,000 grant from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This funding is designated for the construction of a modern fish market in Congo Town, Monrovia. The facility is intended to include a 20-ton cold room, energy-efficient power systems, and refrigerated motorbikes to reduce spoilage and improve food safety. The project also includes support for the University of Liberia to develop fisheries curriculum and training modules.

Additionally, a US$2 million grant supported by the World Bank is being utilized through the Liberia Sustainable Management of Fisheries Project (LSMFP). Implemented by Conservation International with technical support from NaFAA, this initiative focuses on increasing the participation of women in the fisheries sector. The project benefits businesses in Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount County, and Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, aiming to build capacity for women to expand their operations within the industry.
