Liblice transmitter towers to be demolished in October

The Liblice transmitter, featuring two 355-meter towers that have long been the tallest structures in the Czech Republic, is scheduled for demolition in mid-October. České Radiokomunikace announced the plan to blow up the towers, noting that the exact date will depend on weather conditions.

The decision follows the decline of medium-wave (AM) broadcasting. After Czech Radio ceased using the station, the facility lost its primary utility. While it briefly hosted commercial Country Radio using a smaller semiconductor transmitter, the station eventually moved to FM and DAB+ technologies to ensure better coverage and lower costs.

Local residents and interest groups have attempted to save the landmark. Proposals included converting one tower into an observation tower, but maintenance costs were estimated at up to 200 million CZK. A petition was also launched to delay the demolition and explore alternative uses. Following the removal of the Liblice towers, the Krašov transmitter will become the tallest structure in the country at 347.5 meters.
