Liblice transmitter towers demolition

České radiokomunikace has announced the scheduled demolition of the Liblice transmitter towers, which have been the tallest structures in the Czech Republic since 1976. The two 355-meter towers are slated for demolition in mid-October, with the removal of steel structures expected to continue through late November. The exact timing of the demolition may depend on weather conditions.

The decision stems from the decline of medium-wave (AM) broadcasting and high maintenance costs. Following the cessation of use by Czech Radio, the facility lost its primary utility. Maintaining the towers would have required approximately 170 million to 200 million CZK for repairs, including elevator and anchor cable replacements. Marek Procházka, director for legal and regulatory affairs at České radiokomunikace, cited a lack of customer interest and high operating costs as primary drivers for the decision.

While local residents and interest groups attempted to save the landmark through petitions and proposals to convert a tower into an observation site, these efforts did not prevent the demolition. Once removed, the Krašov transmitter will become the tallest structure in the country.
