Libya and Somalia leaders discuss cooperation in New Alamein

Libyan Presidential Council President Mohamed al-Menfi and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met in New Alamein, Egypt, on the sidelines of the inaugural Alamein-Africa Business Forum. The leaders discussed strengthening bilateral ties and increasing coordination across various sectors to serve the interests of both nations.

The discussions also addressed regional developments, specifically focusing on security and stability challenges within the Horn of Africa. Al-Menfi expressed appreciation for Somalia’s support of the Libyan political process and its advocacy for a Libyan-led solution in international forums such as the UN Security Council, the African Union, and the Arab League.

In return, President Mohamud praised al-Menfi’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized Somalia’s commitment to fostering peace in Libya through an inclusive, Libyan-led political process involving all national parties. The meeting took place amidst Libya’s ongoing political division between the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity and the Benghazi-based administration, with the United Nations continuing to mediate efforts toward a unified constitutional framework for elections.
