Licata court issues sentences for Omnia waste depot arson

An Italian court has released the motivations for the sentencing regarding the arson attack that destroyed the Omnia waste depot in Licata on January 20, 2024.

Carmelo D’Antona, 40, received a 14-year prison sentence and was identified by the judge as the material executor of the fire. Gioconda Stemma, 53, was sentenced to 4 years, while Giuseppe Barbera, 51, and Maurizio Brancato, 50, each received 4 years and 8 months.

The court determined that the arson was planned by D’Antona and Barbera, with D’Antona and Stemma acting as the physical perpetrators. The sentencing includes an aggravating circumstance for crimes against public health, as the fire released dioxins and caused significant air pollution. Evidence used in the ruling included telephone records, wiretaps, and detailed testimony from Barbera.
