Licey and Escogido commemorate 71 years of night baseball

The Dominican winter baseball championship begins on October 16, marking the 71st anniversary of the first night game played between rivals Tigres del Licey and Leones del Escogido.

That historic matchup took place on October 27, 1955, at Estadio Trujillo, where Leones del Escogido defeated Licey 4-1 before a crowd of over 16,000 fans. In that inaugural night game, left-handed pitcher Ken Lehman secured the victory for Escogido, outperforming Arnold Atkins. The upcoming season features the rivalry in a potentially significant context, as it may be one of the final meetings between the two capital franchises at their shared home stadium.
