Lidl launches European Wero payment option in German online store
Lidl Germany has introduced the European Payments Initiative's Wero real‑time account‑to‑account payment system in its online shop. The service went live on 24 July 2026, making Lidl the first major grocery retailer in Germany to offer Wero for e‑commerce. Customers can pay directly from their banking app or by scanning a QR code, with the transaction completed in seconds. Use of Wero requires an account with one of the 18 European banks that participate in the scheme and activation of the service in the bank’s mobile app. At launch the option is limited to online purchases; it is not yet available in physical Lidl stores.
The rollout follows a broader push by European banks to provide a sovereign alternative to U.S. payment providers such as PayPal, Google Pay, Visa and Mastercard. More than 57 million European users already use Wero. Lidl plans to extend the payment option to its online shops in Belgium and France later in 2026.
