Liechtenstein abortion initiative seeks decriminalization

Supporters of the ‘Fristenlösung für Liechtenstein’ (Time-limit solution for Liechtenstein) initiative have concluded a signature collection period following the Landtag’s decision to declare the initiative constitutionally compliant in June 2026.

The initiative seeks to allow for decriminalized abortions up to the third month of pregnancy, remove information bans for doctors, and ensure costs are covered by health insurance. Currently, Liechtenstein remains one of the few European countries where abortion is fundamentally prohibited, making the procedure a criminal offense for both the woman and the physician. While traveling abroad for the procedure has been possible since 2015, proponents argue that the initiative is necessary to provide women with support and medical guidance free from the threat of criminal prosecution or social stigma.
