Liesl Karlstadt Exhibition Opens at Valentin‑Karlstadt Museum in Munich

After a two‑year renovation the Valentin‑Karlstadt Museum in Munich has reopened. The museum’s new permanent exhibition, titled “Flug zum Mond,” focuses on the life and work of comedian Liesl Karlstadt. Curated by museum director Sabine Rinberger, the display highlights Karlstadt’s unconventional career path—from modest origins and early work as a shop assistant to her breakthrough as a cabaret performer alongside Karl Valentin. It also details her personal pursuits, such as learning to drive, earning a boat licence, and undertaking mountaineering and ski tours, underscoring her reputation as a daring and modern woman of the early 20th century.

The exhibition examines Karlstadt’s creative partnership with Valentin, noting how she contributed scripts and shaped their improvisational sketches. Rinberger emphasizes Karlstadt’s empathy and anticipatory skill, which complemented Valentin’s humor, and argues that their joint work remains a cornerstone of German comedic heritage.
