Iran offers to honor June peace memorandum if US fulfills commitments

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed Iran's willingness to return to the June Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding if the United States fulfills its prior commitments. Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Kyrgyzstan, Pezeshkian accused Washington of reneging on the agreement shortly after its signing, which was intended to end hostilities and address nuclear and economic issues.

The diplomatic offer follows a recent military escalation in the Strait of Hormuz. US forces conducted strikes against Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island, an action the US described as a precise response to IRGC minelaying activities. Iran retaliated by launching ballistic missiles at US military bases in Jordan, though Jordanian air defenses reported intercepting eight of the missiles.

Mediators, including Qatar, Pakistan, and Oman, are actively working to resume negotiations to prevent further escalation. While Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran is not seeking war, he warned that the country would respond decisively to continued aggression. The conflict has caused significant regional tension and impacted global energy markets, with oil prices reacting to the instability in the Strait of Hormuz.
