Liguria and Marche regions reject new waste incinerator projects

In Liguria, the Five Star Movement’s provincial coordinator for Savona, Stefania Scarone, said a waste incinerator would be “a choice profoundly wrong for future generations” and argued the region should move toward circular‑economy solutions rather than building new plants. She added that policy should reward high‑quality recycling instead of relying on “obligations, bans and sanctions.”

In the Marche region, Legambiente Marche president Marco Ciarulli warned that a proposed incinerator, projected to cost about €400 million and burn roughly 270 000 t of urban waste plus 100 000 t of special waste annually, would lock the region into an expensive, unsustainable model. Ciarulli stressed that “closing the waste cycle is mandatory, but before we think of burning it we must look at more environmentally and economically sustainable development models,” urging investment in recycling infrastructure and incentives for proper waste sorting.
