Liguria and Piemonte pledge joint water‑reservoir project as drought worsens
The mayor of Imperia, Claudio Scajola, and the president of the Piedmont region, Alberto Cirio, met on 8 August 2026 at the Palazzo Civico in Imperia to address a severe water emergency affecting both regions. They highlighted ongoing cooperation in firefighting, with Canadair aircraft drawing water from the Ligurian Sea to combat forest fires in the Alpi Marittime.
The two officials agreed to develop medium‑ and long‑term infrastructure, focusing on constructing and upgrading reservoirs (invasi) in the Alpi Marittime area. They plan to submit the projects for inclusion in Italy’s list of strategic works of national interest and to seek funding under the EU 2028‑2034 programming cycle. An operational workshop is scheduled for the coming autumn in Imperia to finalize the action plan and involve relevant local and regional authorities.
