Italy launches 2026-2027 seasonal influenza vaccination campaign

Italy has launched its 2026-2027 seasonal influenza vaccination campaign, with various regions implementing localized rollouts. In Umbria, the regional government has purchased over 200,000 doses, including specialized nasal sprays for children and high-dose vaccines for the elderly. The campaign prioritizes vulnerable groups, including those over 65, the chronically ill, and children aged six months to 14 years.

Other regional updates include Piedmont, where pediatric vaccinations begin on October 8 followed by adult doses on October 13, and Liguria, which has initiated a progressive schedule starting with children. Localized efforts are also noted in areas such as Cremona, Lodi, and Mandello del Lario, which are hosting open days and specific booking windows to manage access.

Health experts and institutions are emphasizing the importance of pediatric vaccination to reduce community impact and pressure on healthcare services. While the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) recommends age-stratified strategies, officials note a gap between vaccine availability and family adherence that requires improved communication and accessibility.
