Liibaan Ahmed Hassan elected Galmudug president
Galmudug lawmakers in Somalia have elected Liibaan Ahmed Hassan as the new regional president. Running on the Justice and Unity Party (JSP) ticket, Hassan secured 72 votes from the 89-member House of Representatives, defeating Abdulkadir Abdullahi Diriye of the Sincad political organization, who received 14 votes. Three ballots were declared invalid.
In a separate election, Abdiweli Ibrahim Garyare of the JSP was elected vice-president, receiving 64 votes against 20 for Abdisatar Mohamed Geelle. The leadership election follows a period of legal and political disputes that led Somalia’s Supreme Court to annul previous parliamentary results due to procedural violations, necessitating a rerun.
Hassan succeeds Ahmed Abdi Kariye, who had led the state since February 2020. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud welcomed the results, urging the new administration to prioritize security, infrastructure, and community unity.
