Lille AI summit highlights concrete uses and job impacts of massive data centre investments

A summit titled “L'IA avec nous” was held in Lille at the Euratechnologies incubator, drawing about 1,000 participants and a dozen of leading speakers from business, research, politics and civil society. The event focused on moving the discussion of artificial intelligence from infrastructure to concrete applications across industry, health, education, culture and public services, as well as the associated training and employment effects.

Regional officials highlighted the plan to develop several high‑power data centres in the Hauts‑de‑France, backed by billions of euros of investment. Japanese conglomerate SoftBank announced an initial €45 billion commitment to build three large centres by 2031. French AI minister Anne Le Hénanff stressed the need for ethical and environmentally sustainable AI, while noting that only a minority of firms currently see a measurable impact. Speakers also debated the energy consumption of data centres and the potential for job creation versus displacement, with the region aiming to position itself as a European AI hub.

The summit concluded with remote remarks from President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister‑designate Mark Carney, underscoring the strategic importance of AI for France and Europe.
