Lima culture ritual sacrifice discovered at Huaca Pucllana

Archaeologists at the Huaca Pucllana site in Lima have discovered the well-preserved skeleton of an adult male, dubbed the ‘Lord of the Canal,’ dating back approximately 1,400 years to the Lima culture.

The individual was found positioned within an underground water channel, lying on his left side with his skull facing west toward the Pacific Ocean. The discovery, led by a team from the Ministry of Culture of Peru, suggests the body was part of a ritual human sacrifice intended to consecrate and seal the water network.

Accompanying the remains were ceramic fragments, including a serpent head, white quartz, and marine remains. Unlike the surrounding adobe structures, the ceremonial well was uniquely constructed using river cobbles, reinforcing the theory of a deliberate ritual offering.
