Lima culture ritual discovery at Huaca Pucllana

Overview

Archaeologists excavating the Huaca Pucllana site in Lima, Peru, have discovered the skeletal remains of an adult male dating back approximately 1,400 years. Linked to the Lima culture, the discovery suggests the individual was part of a ritual human sacrifice intended to consecrate and seal an underground water canal connected to a ceremonial well.

The remains were found in a specific orientation, lying on the left side with the skull facing west toward the Pacific Ocean. The ceremonial well was uniquely constructed with river stones or cobbles, distinguishing it from the typical adobe brick structures found elsewhere in the complex.

Accompanying the remains were ceramic fragments, including a serpent head, white quartz, and marine remains. Researchers, including a team from the Ministry of Culture of Peru, noted that the find—sometimes referred to as the ‘Lord of the Canal’—will assist in reconstructing ancient ceremonies and understanding the ritual practices of the Lima culture.
