Lima, Peru sees 152 deaths in extortion attacks on public transport (2024‑2026)
Peruvian prosecutors reported 214 extortion‑linked attacks on public‑transport vehicles in Lima and Callao between August 2024 and May 2026. The attacks injured 131 people and killed 152, for a total of 283 victims. Most incidents occurred in the districts of San Juan de Lurigancho, Comas and San Juan de Miraflores. "94.4 % of the attacks targeted microbuses, combis and mototaxis," and 97.7 % involved firearms, while motorcycles were used by assailants in 60.3 % of cases. More than half of the attacks (58.4 %) happened at night, with drivers accounting for 69.3 % of the fatalities. The government extended the state of emergency in Lima and Callao for 60 days, maintaining police and army presence and restricting several constitutional rights to curb the wave of violence linked to extortion, homicide and sicariato.
